How an Unpredictable Table Tested Our Team

At the start of the FIRST LEGO League season, the Careful Recovery mission gave our team a lot of trouble. Even when our robot drove to the correct spot, the mission sometimes failed. Our attachment was thin and unstable, so small movements could completely change the result. Sometimes the structure stayed up. Other times, it fell over when we did not expect it to.

Finding the Real Problem

As we kept testing, we noticed that the attachment was not the only issue. The competition table also caused problems. Small gaps between table sections changed how the robot moved, especially while turning. Sometimes the robot turned perfectly. Other times, the wheels shifted slightly and threw off the whole mission.

At first, this inconsistency frustrated our team. The mission worked during some runs but failed during others. Because of this, we realized we needed to focus on reliability instead of just making the mission work once.

Making the Robot More Reliable

We began testing the mission over and over again. During each run, we watched every movement carefully. After many tests, we discovered that turning caused most of the inconsistency. To solve this problem, we redesigned our approach and removed as many turns as possible. Instead of using difficult turns, we made the robot drive in straighter and more controlled paths.

We also improved the attachment design. We made parts of it stronger and more stable so it would not shift during runs. Along with small code changes, these improvements made the mission much more reliable.

By the end of the season, our team learned an important lesson. In robotics, small adjustments can make a huge difference. We also learned that consistency matters just as much as creativity. A mission that works only sometimes is not enough during competition. A strong robot must perform reliably under many different conditions.
